Proven Myths:

Healthy Fats? Who Knew…

Since the beginning of time, we have all been told to find balance in our food choices- especially when it comes to our intake of fatty foods. But what if I told you that not all fats are bad fats? That's right! Here is a list of some starter high-fat foods that are actually super healthy, and can be essential in a balanced diet.

AVOCADO

Some may call this the most “basic” of food groups- and yes, I said groups because avocados contain so many good things and can be incorporated into so many different recipes, they might as well be their own food group. With fat at 77% by calories in one avocado, this fruit holds many health benefits including ones related to cardiovascular health. Avocados are also a great source of fiber, benefitting your tummy. They also contain the highest source of potassium found in any food, with 40% more potassium than even bananas!

DARK CHOCOLATE

As one of the best tasting health foods out there, dark chocolate (with at least 70% cacao) holds fat at 65% of calories! These fats, like avocado fats, have cardiovascular benefits as well. Dark chocolate is also super high in fiber (at 11%) and contains essential antioxidants- scoring as one the highest foods with antioxidants, above even blueberries! There are even some studies that show how dark chocolate can improve brain function and help protect your skin when being exposed to sunlight.

NUTS

Nuts are super good for you! In fact, along with being high in healthy fats and fiber- they are also a great plant-based source of protein. The addition of nuts into a healthy diet can help an individual be at a lower risk for various diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type-2 diabetes. They also contain vitamin E and magnesium- two essential nutrients that most people do not get enough of!

EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL

Something that everyone should keep in their house for everyday cooking, is EVOO! This type of olive oil is extracted using only natural methods, and is standardized based on purity and quality of taste and smell. EVOO is loaded with healthy fats and powerful antioxidants like vitamins E and K. It is yet another healthy fat that improves cardiovascular health! It even has been shown to lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol markers.
