Truth or Myth: Red Wine and Dark Chocolate, a Heart Healthy Treat?
Cutting out sweets and alcohol from your diet to try and be healthier? Well here’s the thing, YOU DON’T HAVE TO! Having a treat every now and then is never a bad thing, especially if you’re picking the right kind treats. After a long week, I am certainly guilty of unwinding with a glass (or two) of wine. And if I feel like I am about to have a mid-day crash, I always reach for some chocolate. But here’s the thing: the wine is always red and the chocolate is always dark. And those two kinds of treats actually hold health benefits that make them excellent treats to indulge in!
Dark chocolate has new found reputation for being heart-healthy! Cocoa beans are rich in flavonoids and therefore rich in antioxidants. Flavonoids are a plant-based nutrient that help protect plants from toxins and repair any damage. Along with these antioxidant qualities, dark chocolate has also been proven to lower blood pressure But the more processed the chocolate is, the less health benefits it has! So for optimum health benefits, always choose a dark chocolate that is at least 70% or higher in cocoa content! And always remember, that while this treat may be heart-healthy, it not a “health” food and should be enjoyed in moderation!
Drinking red wine- in moderation- as been proven to lower the risk of heart disease. The antioxidant in red wine called resveratrol, has received a lot of attention for its health benefits! This antioxidant can help prevent damage to blood vessels, reduce “bad” cholesterol, and prevent blood clots. For optimal health benefits, always consider treating yourself to an organic red wine! But too much red wine, or any alcohol for that matter, can actually raise your risk of getting high blood pressure, liver damage, obesity, and certain types of cancer. So just like dark chocolate, red wine is best enjoyed in moderation!
